It finally happened.

I knew the day would come sooner or later. After 28 months, Mason FINALLY figured out how to climb out of his crib. Majority of my friends who have children around the same age have made this transition quite awhile ago, but I figured, why change something that works? He wasn't big enough to get out of his crib until now. The crib we have must just be higher than most (or drop lower than most?) and there was just no way Mason could have thrown his leg up over the side to get down until now, but he finally did it. It's not that big of a deal, because we were in the process of turning the guest room into Mason's new room anyway and had planned on eventually moving him from his smaller room with the crib, into a bigger room with the big boy bed (formerly the guest bed) so that he'd have more room to play with his toys. However, we were going to wait until after my parents came to visit in October, so that they could sleep in the bed one last time instead of being stuck on the not-so-comfy pull-out couch downstairs, but it is what it is! There's no turning back now!

This is how it happened. Mick and I had put Mason down for his nap on Saturday, but much to our dismay, for the 3rd day in a row, he decided he was too cool for naps and basically jumped up and down for an hour having the time of his life. We ignored him for awhile, but after awhile we looked at the monitor and discovered this:

That crazy little boy of ours leaned over the side of his crib, pulled his entire crazy coupe ball pit in the crib with him, and was sitting in the middle of it, having a blast. After cracking up over it for a good 5 minutes, it was time to put my stern face on, go into his room, take the ball pit out of his crib and tell him to go to sleep.

BUSTED

We had pretty much given up on the idea that he was ever going to take a nap, but I went back to reading double stroller reviews as Mick played some silly game on his laptop. About 15 minutes later, we heard a knock on the bedroom door and quickly glanced at the monitor. Mason was no longer in the crib. He had finally done it. We knew now was the time. We didn't want to chance putting him back in that crib for a second now that he knew how to get out, because we were afraid he'd fall and hurt himself. Luckily for me, since we were going to make the transition soon anyway, I had already ordered and received his new "big boy" bedding and had just put it on the bed earlier that day. We still had our work cut out for us, though, cleaning out all the drawers and taking out all the extra toys, so nothing would distract him and make him want to play instead of sleep, but we did it. We got all of it done by bedtime that night (with the exception of a few drawers still needing cleared out) and Mason spent his first night in his big boy bed!

testing it out earlier that day. He looks so tiny in that big bed!

all tucked in for his first night in the big boy bed!

So far, it's going.... well.. it's going haha. Mason has always surprised me with how easily he transitions into things. He gave up his binky like he never even needed it in the first place and he loves potty training. He is getting closer to being fully trained everyday (if mom and dad would just get over the fear of him peeing his pants in public and take him to the mall in his underwear, he probably would be fully trained by now, so I blame us for that, not him. He's doing great!)
the potty king on his throne

However, this big boy bed thing has definitely been the biggest challenge so far. He goes to sleep fine in it at night, but my 6:30 a.m. wake up call this morning was not my ideal way to wake up. (I know I have no sympathy from parents whose kids are early risers and are awake by that time everyday anyway, but my kid has always slept until 8:30-9ish, so it will take some getting use to for me if this ends up being our new "normal" routine) Naptimes haven't been going well either, but he is actually napping today, for the first time in 5 or 6 days... probably because he woke up so early this morning, he's exhausted. I'm sure, like everything else, it'll get easier with time. I just hope it's a quick process. Like I said, though, there's no turning back now. Mason is officially a big boy!
